Is Best Doctors a list company?

No. Since 1989, Best Doctors has conducted one of the largest ongoing peer-to-peer physician polls within health care to identify the physicians other physicians trust most. Best Doctors maintains a proprietary, global database—free from commercial and financial bias—of more than 50,000 physicians in over 450 specialties, who lend their diagnostic decision support expertise to treating physicians to ensure the highest quality of care is delivered at the local level.

How does Best Doctors determine who to include on its database?

Every two years, Best Doctors undertakes the largest, continuous-peer survey of the medical profession to develop its database. Voting doctors are asked “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to which you would refer them?”

How do you decide which doctors to survey?

The Best Doctors in America® List is the companion to the Best Doctors proprietary, global database of more than 50,000 physicians in over 450 specialties.

How do you know you've found the best doctors?

Best Doctors has proprietary software that analyses the surveys and provides an aggregate score for each physician. This yields a preliminary set of doctors who meet the initial criteria for inclusion. These physicians are then checked for licensure, certification and disciplinary actions.

We have developed a system for screening doctors that is unmatched for its rigour and accuracy. Furthermore, the doctors’ surveys are confidential.

Once a Best Doctor is selected, does he or she remain on the list forever?

No, our peer review process requires that every listed Best Doctor be re-evaluated by their peers in each biennial poll.

Can a physician or his or her hospital pay to be on the Best Doctors database?

Doctors and hospitals cannot pay to be listed, nor do we pay them to participate in the poll. Only doctors who earn peer consensus and meet the inclusion criteria are selected for the Best Doctors network.

What are the benefits of being recognized as a Best Doctors physician?
  • Recognition of, and association with, some of the best specialists in their country and around the world.
  • The potential to collaborate in the preparation of second medical opinions if requested by Best Doctors and to receive remuneration on a case by case basis.
  • The enhancement of medical practice by receiving clinical cases in one’s own specialty and subspecialty with expertise from international Best Doctors.

The opportunity to improve the overall quality of health care in the New Zealand but also of individuals overseas who could benefit from superior clinical ability, expertise and service.

How do doctors feel about the survey?

The medical community has been very supportive over the years we’ve administered our survey both in the US and in other parts of the world. We see a continuous overall increase of specialists that participate in the surveys and in the amount of specialists that are elected by their peers to form part of the Best Doctors database of experts.
